Can you describe the shooter, sir? Yes, a little naked man with wings, carrying a bow and arrow!

Today is Valentine's Day. Not to be confused with Global Love Day on May 1. That is the day where the world decides to put aside their differences and promote peace, love and harmony throughout the world. I'm going to have to post a reminder for you all on May 1, so you can all put on your tie-dye and send out your good vibes to the world. But I digress. Today is Valentine's Day. Did I already say that?

But here's my question. When was it decided that Valentine's day was a kid's holiday? I'm confused. I thought the whole idea behind Valentine's day was a day for lovers? In fact here is what wikipedia says:

Valentine's Day
or Saint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14, by many people throughout the world. In the West, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers or offering confectionary. The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas. The association estimates that, in the US, men spend on average twice as much money as women. As it should be.

Ok, I added that last sentence. But notice, nowhere does it state that Valentine's is a day where kids express their undying love to their classmates in the form of a Sponge Bob card with a Hershey Kiss attached. So where did we go wrong? Answers people! I need answers! Now, having said all that, since I'm forced into this tradition, I tend to go overboard. I think store bought Valentine's and Halloween costumes are against my religion. I don't know why I do this to myself, but it is simply something I can't help. I don't really like to do anything half-way. I'm an all or nothin' gal! Unfortunately, the nothin' comes into play more often than the all.

These were our Valentine's this year.

Aiden got this from her Primary Teacher.

Devin got these from her YW teacher.

And all I got was this.

That's right! A night away at a hotel all by myself!! Just kidding. I took Matt with me. I'm nice like that. We went to Salt Lake for the night, had a little PF Chang's, hung out in the hot tub with a bunch of frat boys from Buffalo drinking watered down Utah beer (they were shocked to hear that but said it explained a lot) and just had an overall fabulous time.

So bear with me for a moment as I wish my honey bunny, my pookie bear, my love bug, my tater tot, ok sorry--my husband a Happy Valentine's Day! Plato said, "At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet". He lied. I'm no poet and I know it. If I were, I'd say things like, "I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach. " But Elizabeth Barrett Browning already said that.

So here's what I will say.
I love you. But you know that. What you might not know, is that I really like you, too. You're just fun to hang out with and you laugh at my jokes. You tell me I'm beautiful everyday. You make people laugh wherever we go, unless they're really confused by your sense of humor, which happens, too. But then that just cracks me up and reminds me again that I really like you. Thank you for loving me and dare I say, liking me, too?

Oh yeah. And thanks for this weekend ;)

Awww, happy Valentines Day to you and your Pookie. I'm glad it was a good one.
I especially enjoyed the comment about people being confused about your Tater Tot's sense of humor. Not that that's ever happened to me. ;)

Loved the Valentines, too! So cute! It's possible that I'll steal that idear someday, but I'm not good at going all-out for holidays--I guess I'm too lazy. Maybe I'll have to up the ante when my kids get older and I'm forced to be more creative to find things they enjoy. I sure hope not.

Cute Valentines cards! I agree - how did this become a "must do" holiday for kids - I don't get it either. Glad you and Matt had a great get away - sounds like fun.

Glad you had a great Valentine's! Those cards are a great idea!

My theory on how V-day got to be a kids' holiday - Marketing. I mean, a couple only equals 2 ppl buying cards & candy & whatnot. But kids classes are full of 30-40 (or more? I'm not up on class sizes nowdays) ppl. They will buy cards. They will buy candy. They may buy their teacher some flowers. And there ya go. They upped their profits manyfold!

*laugh* But, I fell into that when I was little. I loved writing out cards & handing them out w/ the lollies. : )
